🟢 Laparoscopic Gallbladder Removal Surgery (Cholecystectomy)

What Is the Function of the Gallbladder?

The gallbladder is a small organ located beneath the liver. Its main role is to store bile, a digestive fluid that helps break down fats.
When gallstones form or the gallbladder becomes repeatedly inflamed, it can cause severe pain and digestive problems — making surgical removal of the gallbladder the best and most permanent treatment.

⚠️ When the gallbladder is diseased and starts forming stones, it should be completely removed — not just treated by dissolving or breaking the stones.
Stone fragmentation does not solve the underlying problem, and symptoms or new stones usually recur shortly after.

Diagnosing Gallbladder Diseases

Gallbladder problems are usually diagnosed using ultrasound, which can detect stones or inflammation.
In some cases, when gallbladder dysfunction is suspected, a HIDA scan may be performed to evaluate how well the gallbladder is working.

When Is Surgery Needed?

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) is recommended in cases of:

  • Gallstones causing recurrent pain on the right side of the abdomen

  • Acute or chronic cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder)

  • Bile duct obstruction due to stones

  • Pancreatitis caused by gallstones

Complex Conditions Related to Gallstones

1. Bile Duct Obstruction (Choledocholithiasis)
Sometimes, a stone moves from the gallbladder into the bile ducts, causing jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes) and elevated liver enzymes.
In these cases, an ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) may be required before or after surgery to remove the stone and clear the bile duct.

2. Gallstone Pancreatitis
This is one of the most serious complications. It requires initial conservative treatment in the hospital with IV fluids and rest for the digestive system,
followed by laparoscopic gallbladder removal once the inflammation has settled, to prevent recurrence.

Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic gallbladder removal is the modern and safest technique for treating gallbladder disease.
The operation is done through four small incisions in the abdomen, avoiding a large surgical cut, which leads to:

  • Less postoperative pain

  • Faster recovery

  • Early discharge (most patients go home the same day)

  • Excellent cosmetic results with minimal scarring

The gallbladder is extracted through a very small incision with almost no visible surgical marks.

Postoperative Care

  • Patients are encouraged to walk and move on the same day of surgery.

  • Start with light meals for the first two days, then gradually resume a normal diet.

  • Avoid lifting heavy objects for at least two weeks.
